'SOUND RELATIONSHIPS' THE KEY TO YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR'S SUCCESS IN AUSTRALIA

SOPRANO Tania de Jong has been named Australia's Social Entrepreneur of the Year for her work with disadvantaged youth.

As the founder of non-profit organisation The Song Room, Ms de Jong has helped more than 70,000 students gain access to music and performing arts programs.

The award was presented last night at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards.

Ernst & Young managing partner Ruth Picker said Ms de Jong had shown exceptional business skills and used her musical talents to help others.

"Results are measured to ensure the effectiveness of The Song Room's work, and Tania has developed sound relationships and partnerships to assist in increasing revenues, which are applied to the benefit of schools and children," she said.

Ms de Jong, who lives in Abbotsford, had already received the Social Entrepreneur of the Year award for the southern region.

The 2006 Australian Entrepreneur of the Year was jointly awarded to Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar of Atlassian, a Sydney collaboration software company.

Ernst & Young founded the Entrepreneur of the Year program in 2001.

They need to discover that this is sometimes the way one learns. They need to be given opportunities to grow in confidence and to contribute their own ideas.
